Sad news

My friend in the building died today at 1:30 a.m. A celebration of life will be held at some point in time.  Her daughter will call me to let me know.

Even if it is held in Toronto, I am sure that some of us would like to go.  Angela was a fighter and she fought until the end but lost her battle with pancraetic cancer.

This notification was the second death today.

As you can imagine, I am feeling very sad right now.  We had become friends over the nine years I lived here.  This is the second death of a friend here in this building in nine years.

The sad thing is that she was not yet 65 and had always to struggle to make ends meet.  Her daughter is a gem and is arranging everything right now.

She will let me know.

Thanks for reading this sad note.  Remember that none of us knows when our time will come and live each day as if it is your last.  Tell your loved ones and dear friends that you care for them.

Some sad news

Hayati called me when I was out this evening at a meeting.  His sister Fevziye passed away on Thursday.  He had been to see her at 9 p.m. and she was in a coma.  He stayed with her for an hour, then her daughter Banu came and stayed with her until she died at 4 a.m.

I feel so sad right now especially for Hayati, Banu and Ali and Gupta.

Fevziye was a wonderful lady, cultured and charming.  I stayed with her and her Mother in Turkey for one month in the late 1970's.  All the relatives came to see me and I have so many wonderful memories of the many kindnesses the whole Kurtulan family showed me.  Mrs. Kurtulan reminded me of my grandmother and we took to each other right away.  Fevziye and I got along so well together.  Fevziye and Hayati did most of the translating, although some of the relatives did speak some English.  No family could have been nicer to me than them.

I was so happy that Fevziye came to live in Canada once she retired so that we could see each other.  Banu and Ali and the twins were here already, as was her brother Hayati.

I remember one time in Toronto Fevziye and I were waiting for a streetcar and a European gentleman came up to her and asked her to marry him.  It was a total surprise as we did not know him.

Naturally, she was very nice to him and thanked him, but of course, she did not know him.  We had a little chuckle later on about it as she figured that he wanted a housekeeper.  She was a modest person but in reality, he would have been a very lucky man if he had succeeded in persuading her to see him again.

So many memories flood through my mind of a wonderful friend.  May God grant her paradise.

Sad news

It is now 2:44 a.m. on Wednesday morning.  As seems to be normal for me now, I could not sleep so am up for a little while.

I opened my e-mail and found a message from my friend Bernadette with the very sad news that Kerry has passed away this afternoon.

May God comfort his family.

Sad news

I just got an e-mail from my son to tell me that an old friend of mine is now in Palliative Care in the Toronto area. He received an e-mail from her son.

She has been fighting cancer and it looks like she is losing. She and I go back 37 years, when we first met in our apartment building. We used to walk together pushing our two boys in their strollers. We remained friends all these years even those both of us moved away from Toronto.

The boys, also, have remained friends.

When a friend is in a bad way, my heart grieves especially since there is nothing I can do to help.

Speaking of helping, I saw a sight today which also touched my heart. A Niagara ambulance and Niagara Police cruiser raced through downtown Hamilton with sirens roaring. It was on its way to St. Joseph's I think. I said a prayer in my heart for the person and the family who is in such a delicate position that they had to come all that way to another city to get the care they need.

It just shows me the impermanence of life and that we should cherish our friends and family and live each day to the best of our ability.

On a happier note, I bumped into an acquaintance of mine on the street and we spent some time together. She is a very creative person and she took me to see her display at the Artist Studio on the St. Paul's property. She makes buttons and is a terrific photographer. She is self taught when it comes to both those crafts.

Today I had to renew my Seniors pass at the Go Station and so we walked over there together and shared a fruit drink. Lucky another friend of mine reminded me to do that, or otherwise I would not have been able to take the bus much longer.

In Hamilton the Seniors pass is only $18.00 a month and can be deducted from your bank account which is extremely handy! One has to give them $18.00 to activate the process each year. It is a real bargain!

While I was in the mall, I needed to get my watch battery changed. The price has gone up to $11.00 now but if you consider the fact that the battery lasts one year usually, it is still quite economical.

While I was in the jewelry store, I priced a lovely set, necklace and earrings. The beads were nice and it was long enough to go over my head. I find them the easiest to use especially for people with arthritis! I asked the price, and it was $300 plus tax for the set.

Needless to say, I said thank you and gave it back. It was very nice but not even Swarovski crystals!

Now, I plan to start to transplant my indoor plants and give them new earth. Poor little things have been sadly neglected by me sometimes as I am so busy with other things!

Oh, I forgot, I bumped into four other people in the Mall that I know and had a nice chat with them. One of the ladies had knee surgery six weeks ago, and she is now doing so well that she is using a walker and walking in the mall. However, she said she never wanted to have that operation again as the pain was unbearable and almost drove her mad. She remains on very strong pain medication.

I sure can relate to that! She is fortunate, she has a husband at home and he is retired so he can help her.

Other than that, there is nothing else new today. Must start on the re potting now!

Sad news

Just got an e-mail when I opened up my computer from Ed. His Mom has been taken seriously ill and transported to the hospital, so he and Carmelita are going to Toronto right away.

I will call Margaret and let her know that I will have to get Wheeltrans and the Go bus after all.

I sure hope Ed's Mom will get better soon. He and his sister Anne are such good children to their Mom.

Sad news

I learned this evening at my friend Evelyne Beers passed away from pneumonia. I feel a great loss as she was like a mother to me as well as a friend.

Evelyne has been a wonderful friend to me and has visited me several times here in Hamilton.

We met at a Seniors Group in Downsview and found out that we were neighbours. I have had many a wonderful chat with her in her comfortable home as well as on her lovely long balcony at her condo in Downsview.

I loved her wit and her practicality. Above all, I loved her acceptance of people who practiced different religions than she did or were a different colour than she was. An example to us all!

She was a Bah'ai and a good one, practicing her choice of religions on a daily basis. American by birth, having lived most of her life in the States, but immigrating to Canada to be near her daughter near the end of her life. I learned so much just from listening to her chat about life in the States and her own life. She was a good example.

Since I moved to Hamilton almost seven years ago now, we have remained in touch by visiting back and forth as well as by letters.

Evelyne and Bob Beer, and their daughter Marty, represented the United States on a world tour as Good Will Ambassadors during the 1960's. They were very well known, especially for their Fox Hollow Festivals.

Many a time, I listened with pleasure to Evelyne talking about their experiences. Her cat, Miss Sally Cat and I would listen intently. Evelyne herself was a down to earth type of person and it was my pleasure to have known her.

I shall miss my friend but I am glad that she died so peacefully. May God grant her paradise.
