This is a very sad situation and shows the need of better mental health care for soldiers, police, firemen and anybody who deals with human tragedy, including doctors and nurses etc. etc.
I personally don't know how they cope as well as they do with all that they see and have to deal with.

Weather and odds and ends for today
The weather remain remains extremely cold, well below zero. I did not venture out yesterday but started pulling things out of the little storage room to sort out what I need to keep and what I can give away. I sure hope my downsizing mood will continue as it will make life simpler for me in the long range plan.
It sure is a lot of work right now though!
Speaking of work, my friend Kevin dropped by to check his emails as his computer is down and he will get a new one within a week. In the meantime, we had herbal tea and I told him about the good job that was done to put a VHS into DVD. I mentioned that I had 15 more to have done and he volunteered to do them for me. Apparently he does this all the time for his own VHS. I offered to give him money to do this for me, but he said no.
He's going to do all Miss Marple ones and Hercule Pierrot as well as some other favourite ones I just could not part with! My other videos have gone with Thanh who knows somebody who would appreciate them so that also makes me happy. I take good care of everything I have so they are all in perfect condition.
Thanh also knows somebody who needs linens and so he took some of them. I kept enough to last me at least 20 years but likely I will not last that long myself!
Isn't it a strange and sobering thought that most of our possessions, if well made, will outlast us? I have things from my parents and my aunt and uncle which I cherish. Every time I see them, I am reminded of my family members.
Speaking of work, my son has agreed to help me move a lady who needs a hand as she is ill. She just had major surgery and cannot lift anything for two months. I plan to go up to her current place and help her pack her things within a few days. This will be the third person I have helped with a move, one in Toronto and two here in Hamilton.
Now on to another thing. Today is my teaching day which I look forward to as she is a lovely lady and we have a lot in common even though she is from another continent originally.
I think I will pass along to her what I learned this morning and, in fact, implemented myself when I made my bed. A person suggested this in a blog I follow, to put a fleece blanket on top of the bottom sheet where your feet and legs go. Then put the top sheet and blankets on after that. It will feel cozy and warm when you get into bed rather than ordinary sheets which tend to feel very cold until your own body heat warms the sheets up. I remember having flannelette sheets as top sheets in winters gone by in Quebec where it is a lot colder.
It will be interested to see how this works. Fleece is a wonderful fabric which does keep people warm.
Aside from that, I don't think there is much else new. Keep warm and inside as much as you can on these bitter days......

I will continue with downsizing
I have had several people contact me personally since Christmas Day wondering if I was all right as I didn't write much on this blog.
The reason I have not written much was and is, because nothing much of interest is going on for me at the moment.
My time has been spent in "downsizing". reading books from the library and after my son picked up a DVD player for me, in borrowing DVD's from the library. I mostly borrow documentaries at this point.
Speaking of downsizing, I had so many VHS tapes which I no longer can play alas, so my neighbour Thanh will take them away for me tonight. He knows of some places where they might come in useful.
In the meantime, I have gone to have one of my favourite VHS's copied at the photo store (Monsieur Ibrahim) and will get it back on Wednesday. I will have to see how it turns out before I have my Agatha Christie VHS's copied. It is very expensive to do that and at the same time, I will enquire at Cheapies in downtown Hamilton if they can order DVD's for me of Agatha Christie's work. I also love "Its a Wonderful Life" and "Tale of Two Cities" so they definitely will be copied onto DVD's eventually.
On a cold winter's day, it is so nice to snuggle down in a chair, put on a favourite movie and have a cup of herbal tea once the housework is done. When you have them at home, it is much easier than borrowing them from the library and having to have them back at the library within a week. I have borrowed some Miss Marple DVD's already and thoroughly enjoyed them. I am on the waiting list for others as well. They are very popular at my local library and there is a long wait.
I also have had the pleasure of finding out that my CD's of my personal pictures can be played on the new DVD player. I will put more of these digital pictures on CD's and DVD's in time. It is so delightful to see the pictures on a large screen. It is almost like one is there at the event.
Alas for me, two years of work on a story I was writing has been destroyed by the touch of a computer button. I did it myself. A good friend who is excellent on the computer came last night to check it out for me on Word. He said that it is definitely gone. My story was almost finished and I liked it. As you can imagine, I am not very happy with this. .
Luckily for me, I had another copy of a much earlier version and only four pages of it done which means it was only the beginning stages of it, and so I transferred it to Google Drive. I started over again and since I know how it has to go, it will be fine.
I wrote a poem many years ago about a love/hate relationship with computers which was published in a Toronto newspaper. I have finally found it and copied and pasted it to this blog. It describes my feelings exactly!

I have a love/hate relationship
Not with a person but a machine
This monster drives me around the bend
Can you guess which machine I mean?
It has a screen within a frame
A button to make it spring alive
At my house its home is on a desk
It brings both good and evil from within
There are times I think there’s a gremlin inside
Waiting to spring a big surprise
On a poor unsuspecting fool as I

Tower Poetry Winter Launch
This afternoon the winter launch of the 100th poetry book published by Tower Poetry Society was held. George Down was the Master of Ceremonies.
Fortunately, the weather held off and we had poets from Sarnia, Ontario come to Hamilton to read their work.

A DVD I would strongly recommend
It is called The Forgotten Woman (La Femme oubliee).
It is a documentary on widows in the country of India. As many readers will know, Suttee or Sati (widow burning) was outlawed in 1827 by the British Government General of India. However, it does not necessarily mean that it does not happen today. There have been cases as late as 2008 when Suttee was done in rural areas.For those who may not know this terminology, when the Hindu husband dies, his wife also will join him (alive) on his funeral pyre.
I am mentioning this so that you may see what women have gone through (and perhaps still do) when their husband dies.
It seems, from this excellent document, that women who are widows are discriminated against, some people even thinking that she may be responsible for his death. There are women speaking about their experiences once their husband dies. Some are very old - well over 80. Several of the people talked about their age of marriage (9 years of age) and the life they had with their husbands.
Some were abused by their husbands, some were treated as servants by their in-laws and in the end, when their husband dies, they become outcasts, quite often from their own families. They become an unwanted burden.
From what I understood from this documentary, the widow has no financial support and basically has to face life alone.
Several spoke of the fact that they had many children, but none of them have helped their mothers after she became a widow.
It is a difficult film to see although it certainly is well done.
When one thinks about the lifestyle in North America and most of Europe, and then sees how women are treated and disrespected in various other parts of the world, when a baby girl born into a family is not as welcome as a baby boy, one can see that we humans certainly have a lot to learn about equality and justice.
On a personal note, I am blessed with a wonderful Hindu friend in Toronto and I am sure that she would never consider being a part of such an activity.
